Business Information Pain Points
So back in college we learned that all Businesses differentiate themselves from each other in one of four (4) primary areas. By Product, Price, Customer Service or Supply Chain. Some companies are known for exceptional customer service. The Lodge at Pebble Beach immediately comes to mind as their answer to every guest request seems to be 'Absolutely'. Others, such as Apple, are known for the innovation of their products. So here is the question of the day: How can accurate and timely information help improve any of these differentiators in your business? Without regard to your existing systems, have that roundtable discussion with your management level. This will help you find your pain points and outline where you could use to see additional information.
Simplified Example: Production Planning in a paper mill manufacturing environment ties together orders of like paper grades, finishes, etc. and builds out production runs. The length of that run is dependent on the average expected speed on the machines to produce enough raw WIP material so that when the paper is finished, cut and packaged there is adequate supply to fulfill all of the orders (within a set tolerance). But these production runs to create WIP materials also have a 'recipe' of the raw materials that begin the supply chain - wouldn't it be good for the production planner who is working on a production grade run to automatically view information about the raw materials & quantities needed, amount of current Raw Materials onhand in inventory, as well as other information? Standard minimum order amounts, estimated time from order to delivery, etc.
So think in these terms - how can the automated population of additional information views help your staff be more productive and make quick and intelligent business decisions?
